Mr. Cushing

Lowville Academy High School, founded in 1808 as a private school, has evolved into a top institution of secondary learning through the continued efforts of a supportive community, stable administration and dedicated teaching staff.

On the heels of a successful 201st year of serving students, Lowville Academy High School is proud to continue offering a rich array of academic programs housed in an expanding, modern learning campus that is historically and symbolically situated in the center of town.  Being geographically centered in town, Lowville Academy has a unique opportunity to be the center for cultural, athletic and educational opportunities not only for students but also County residents.  Students who attend represent a mainly white, rural student population though some ethnic diversity is increased from the neighboring Fort Drum influence.  Our poverty index level puts us in a category of high need according to New York State.   Currently, our facilities are being modernized through our "Bicentennial Building Project".  Upon completion in the Fall of 2010, state of the art facilities will enhance our K-12 learning complex.

On the academic side, the high school’s reputation as a leader in the north country comes from a belief in high expectations for students and a caring and dedicated teaching staff.  Recently, academic figures show:

            80% college attendance

            50% 2 year colleges

            30% 4 year colleges

Recent June of 2009 New York State Regents test results show the following performance:

Typically, Lowville Academy enjoys a high graduation rate and low dropout percentage.  In the 2008-2009 New York State report card, accountability areas reflect the following data:

84% Graduation rate (based on Class of 2008)

            1%  Dropout rate (estimated 2008-2009)

Nearly 60% of Lowville Academy High School students earn a New York State Advanced Regents Diploma in a given year.  To accomplish this, students take advantage of strong, caring staff who deliver viable curriculums in Math, Science, English, Social Studies, along with a cadre of fine elective programs including recognized Art and Foreign Language programs.  Nearly 80% of students aspire to some form of post-secondary educational plan which is a testament to their support from parents who embrace the notion of educational opportunity as part of their children’s future.

Recent course additions for top students to challenge themselves by taking Advanced Placement classes have been put in place with more to follow in 2009-2010.  The last several years, Lowville Academy has been recognized by Newsweek magazine as a top American High School based on the number of Advanced Placement examinations taken by the graduating class.

Lowville Academy hopes to support student efforts to compete in the global economy.
