2009 Varsity Track and Field
The NYSPHSAA State Championship Track Meet June 12 and 13 at Cicero-North Syracuse Taylor Haenlin easily cleared 8-06 and 9-03 on her first attempts at each height, but faltered at 10-00, despite three good attempts. Ten feet proved to be the vault necessary to medal. Five Division II vaulters maxed out at ten feet. One of them placed fifth. The others were involved in a four way tie for sixth. Taylor ended up ranked tenth. Link to complete results belowMichelle Haapala spiked herself during her first and only warm-up jump, and had to seek medical attention during the rest of the warm-up period. The bandaging done by the medics proved to be too restrictive, so Michelle took it off and kept the bleeding under control with a couple of fists full of band-aids. Despite the Murphylian start, Michelle equalled her school record PR of 5-02 and won the fifth place medal. Michelle did it the hard way, taking three jumps to clear 5-00 and another three to clear 5-02. Scholar-Athlete Program The Lowville Academy squad accumulated a team GPA of 98.096, and earned the top ranking in section III, and the number three ranking in the entire state of New York. Michelle Haapala earned her way to the championship meet by placing second in the high jump with a state qualifying height of 5-01. Both Michelle and Megan Nuffer of Beaver River cleared 5-01, but Michelle won the spot by virtue of fewer misses. Taylor Haenlin got her first spot in states with a second place finish in the pole vault. Her height og 9-09separated her from a crowd of seven vaulters who had cleared the state qualifying height of 9-03. Ashley Panowicz nearly found her way to the state meet as well, but ended up just missing. Ashley's third jump in the trials was a PR distance of 16-08, one inch beyond the state qualifying standard, and good enough for a second place ranking in the finals. In the finals, Ashley jumped 16-07, and 16-09, and was still ranked second with one jump to go. Unfortunately for Ashley, Ashley Palmer of Phoenix, the number one seed, managed a perfect jump, launching her into second place at 17'05. Ashley got off a good final jump of 16-10.5, but it was not good enough for the stunning upset. Another top finish for Lowville was the 4x400 relay team. Michelle Haapala, Marissa Maring, Taylor Haenlin, and Rachel Ashley placed third, behind Skaneatlas and Beaver River, with a season's best time of 4:16.01 Link to the full results below.
