Greek and Latin Roots
|
|
In sixth grade students learn myriad Greek and Latin Roots, as well as prefixes and suffixes. Connections are made between the vocabulary used in core classes, in daily vocabulary, and extending that knowledge to other areas and learn higher level vocabulary. For example, in social studies class students study the Mediterranean Sea, and in math class they learn about mean, median, and mode. So, when studying roots in reading class, students learn that medi means middle, and terra means earth. Hence the Mediterranean Sea is the middle earth sea. Additionally, they learn that micro means small, scope means see so the microscope students use in science class has a specific reason for being named as such. Students also learn that scrib means to write such as in scribble, and scribes were people who could write in Ancient Egyptian society. The list goes on. Below are websites to assist students in finding these roots, prefixes and suffixes. Some websites include sample words as well and will be noted as such. Addtionally, the Vocabulary from Classical Roots grade 6 workbook is depicted.
