NIE - Newspapers in Education

Students in 6th grade receive the Watertown Daily Times newspaper one day a week for the entire school year. Every Monday the mini pages are included. Students are able to read a variety of topics, complete puzzles, and expand their background knowledge. Additionally, students are allowed to take the newspaper home to share with their family. The newspaper is also used to read serial stories that are published once a year and sometimes twice a year. This year, 2008, special election issues for students were published to provide students with knowledge of the electoral process and information about the candidates themselves. Take a look at the other pages f(links) in this section to read about the serial stories, newspaper activities, and see photos of students doing reader's theatre and reading the newspaper. A new serial story begins on January 13th, 2010. Students will be reading it every Wednesday for 9 weeks. We will be doing it via reader's theatre style. A writing contest follows. Every year a 6th grade student from LACS has been one of the 6 NYS winners or has been a regional winner. Let's see if the tradition continues in 2010. The address for the blog to this new serial story is http://annatommyjake.blogspot.com/ Students will be able to ask the author questions about the story. Check it out parents.
